As an attorney, author, and cross-cultural consultant, National Law Week has special meaning as it focuses on the importance of our legal system to daily life. As we progress in our careers, we have an obligation to motivate and encourage students to succeed in their legal careers. This year, we established the Uprka-Laga-Schweitzer scholarship for the Prague Study Abroad Program at South Texas College of Law – Houston. The scholarship provides an opportunity for students to expand their horizons and gain cultural confidence for their legal practice while studying comparative and cultural heritage law in the Czech Republic.

National Law Week highlights how law and justice help maintain order, protect rights, and it encourages education about the legal process. In 1958, National Law Week was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The idea sprung from his legal counsel, Hicks Epton, who envisioned a special day to honor the law.

National Law Week also underscores the importance of active participation in democracy. Events often include discussions, educational activities, and community programs. Establishing this scholarship is one way of celebrating National Law Week. Consider these additional ideas:

  • Interactive Workshops
  • Mock Trials
  • Movie Nights with Legal Themes
  • Law School Library Tours

How will you celebrate National Law week? Share your ideas with us.
