Worldwide, as well as within the U.S., organizations are recognizing the importance of globally diverse teams for achieving success. Although its origins are unknown, Global Diversity Awareness Month is celebrated annually in October. It is an excellent time to learn about how a culturally diverse organization builds a strong foundation for creativity, engagement, and innovation based on different perspectives. Consider three key reasons why global diversity is important for a business to succeed:
- Increased innovation and reduced risk. AIG, a global insurance agency sets forth in writing their diversity, equity, and inclusion statement on the company’s website, “The diversity of our people is one of AIG’s greatest assets and brings us great pride.” “Through our colleagues, we learn how to better understand our clients, increase innovation, and reduce risk.” AIG is an example of a multinational company that focuses on a future of diversity, equity, and inclusion that is destined to blossom with brilliant talent.
- Respecting diverse team members creates more productivity. When the C-suite respects globally diverse employees, then the management implements this leadership example into the organizational culture among their colleagues. This in turn increases motivation, reduces conflict, and produces better organizational culture according to Forbes Magazine.
- Diversity, equity & inclusion impacts market perception and reputation. At Ericsson one of their core values includes the creation of a diverse and equitable organization. Ericsson accomplishes this for their customers, people, and society. They believe their future growth is determined by collaborating with people from different experiences that drive innovation. Ericsson’s programs and initiatives support this goal. Diversity and Inclusion | Programs and initiatives – Ericsson
