As a second generation Czech American living in Texas, I’m delighted to share that October is Czech American Heritage Month.

On October 1st of 2021, Governor Greg Abbott officially recognized October as Czech American Heritage month to recognize the valued communities of Czechs who have greatly enriched the Lone Star State’s vibrant history and cultural landscape and made innumerable contributions to business, academia, medicine, government, and the arts. He further proclaimed that “Czech Americans’ family values, strong work ethic, and dedication to education strengthen our country.”

On October 12th, 2021, The Commissioners Court of Bexar County “recognizes and celebrates the month of October 2021 as Czech Heritage Month…Texans of Czech ancestry take great pride in sharing with the rest of the state their contributions…and customs that are part of Texas’ rich diverse culture.”

Fellow Texas politician San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg proclaimed, “The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will celebrate Czech Heritage Month, to commemorate the contributions of the Czech culture;…there are more than one million people (living in Texas) who claim Czech heritage…All Texans are encouraged to reflect and acknowledge the contributions of the Czech descendants and take pride in the strength that diversity brings to our great state.”

Almost twenty years ago, in 1982, the Texas Legislature declared October as Czech Heritage Month. During these 31 days, Texas celebrates and shares the contributions that Czechs have made to art, cuisine, fashion, literature, music, and other traditions that make our great state  rich and diverse. So Texas has a history of celebrating the Czechs!

Are you Czech or Czechoslovak? How do you celebrate your heritage?
