Experts trace the origins of wine back 7500 years to what is today known as Iran. This beverage was known to have been enjoyed long before then; however, there isn’t specific evidence available. In current times, we enjoy numerous wine varietals. Today, we celebrate National White Wine day and share a few white wine etiquette tips with our readers. Cheers!

Wine etiquette is a valuable tool when you need to:

  • Impress the future in-laws
  • Attend a business event or formal meal
  • Join the hopping crowd for wine o’clock

Our best wine tips based on advice from wine experts: 

  1. When opening a bottle, do so quietly like a warrior
  2. Hold the chilled wine bottle at the base when pouring
  3. Fill a white wine glass ¾ full; red wine ½ full to allow breathing room
  4. Pre-order white wine, have it chilled and at the table before guests arrive
  5. Pour equal amounts for all present to keep everyone happy
  6. Hold your wine glass at the stem or base of the crystal
  7. Quietly sniff your wine by placing your nose over the glass opening
  8. Taste your wine and think about the flavors in your mouth and on your tongue
  9. Sip from the same glass area to reduce lipstick and smudge marks
  10. Avoid clinking; however if you must, do so at the glass basin not the top
  11. Offer white wine to others before pouring seconds for yourself
  12. Keep white wine chilled when not serving it to guests

What is a Sommelier or a Sommeliere?  A Sommelier is male and a Sommeliere is a female; these are 19th century French words for wine butlers, wine stewards, or wine servers who are specially trained, knowledgeable wine specialists who design a restaurant’s wine list

Did you know white wine will remove a red wine stain on many fabrics? Be sure to check the label; however, the enzymes in white wine help neutralize red wine, making it easier to lift a red wine stain from clothing or carpet.
